We finally arrived after an eventful trip... We missed our plane from Paris to Toulouse, stood in line for a couple hours, and got a flight a few hours later. Evan was amazing! He didn't cry too much, he slept, and time flew. It is really a pleasure to travel with him... When JR and I were scared we'd have to spend the night in Paris because all flights were full, Evan was always smiling and sweet. It makes you realize what's really important...
Everyone has been having a great time. Evan's French family adores him (how could they not?) and Evan loves being passed around, being the center of attention. Of course there's little sweet Clément too, who is very curious and runs around everywhere.
We are catching up with the time difference, and Evan finally is too. We all have a cold but we just got some fancy contraption at the pharmacy to suck the snot out of Evan's nose so I'm excited to try it. Hehehe.
Of course, we are eating a lot, and it's not even close to being done! OK, I should go--we're at the bookstore and Evan is around here somewhere!

And the parents?
Who are these people taking countless photos of little Evan? Who/where are the parents anyway?
Mommy and Daddy come out from behind the camera to show themselves on the blog...

Wait, that's not JR... He refused to do the merengue, so the Peruvian guy and I danced (this was at a friend's house a little while back).

Naptime
Evan is great at going to bed. He hardly ever cries and if he does it's just for a few minutes. OK, there are the occasional times where he cries and cries and we have to soothe him but that is rare. Most of the time he is very happy at naptime. He watches the animals dancing over his head and drifts off to sleep.
OK, mommy, I'm getting sleepy... If you don't mind, I'd like to be alone...

Even though he had a cold last week, he was still always so happy and smiley. It wasn't a bad cold--first JR got it, then Evan, then finally I got a slighter version. Evan just has some congestion and a cough, but it's going away. I will admit I actually like putting saline drops in his nose and sucking out the snot with the bulb syringe... I don't like that it makes him cry, but I like cleaning him and helping him breathe (which lets him eat better). And although he doesn't like it, he is a tough cookie and doesn't complain too much.

Big news, big baby!
Sorry for not posting in so long...
The news is: Evan is no longer on any medication! We've slowly tapered the doses, and yesterday was his first day not taking anything. He still takes multivitamins and iron everyday. He is doing great! He doesn't spit up that much and the reflux seems to be a thing of the past (knock on wood).
More news: he is starting solids! Well, I should say he is starting almost-not-liquids... Yesterday was the first time we gave him rice cereal but the first feeding is just a tiny bit of cereal mixed in some formula, so really it's like slightly thickened liquid. JR put together Evan's new highchair and we had so much fun at the big event.
And finally, last Thursday he weighed in at 15 pounds, 10 ounces, or 7.1 kilos! His length was 65.5 cm or 25.75 inches. In terms of percentiles, he's at 50% for height, and 25% for weight. So he is an average guy in terms of height, and is getting there for weight. By the size of his cheeks you'd think he was super chubby but actually his body is not too chunky ;).
The First Meal
First, we let him play with the spoon. This is his "concentrating face" (although usually his brow is furrowed)--he looks like this when he is really focused on his toys, in his own little world:
The first spoonful made him cringe, as if he was tasting something horrible.

Then a few seconds later he eagerly opened his mouth wide as the spoon approached. What a pro!
Now, keep in mind he just had a bottle right before the highchair meal--a whole 6 ounces--so he wasn't even really hungry... But although he was sleepy, he was still happy!

All done! Kisses before bedtime...
Oh, and there's more news! Evan started daycare. This week was his first full week there, and I've gone to work full-time. The first day he went to daycare (Friday the 1st) he only stayed a few hours because he was crying so much and refused to eat. JR went to take him home for the rest of the afternoon. Evan had a shot in the morning so was overly grumpy, and the big change of daycare was too much for him.
Since then, he seems to like daycare. JR drops him off in the morning (I go to work earlier) and I pick him up. He doesn't cry, and I swear when I pick him up he's the only baby not screaming and crying. He smiles at his caretaker, and barely notices I've arrived. The woman tells me she holds him a lot, plays with him, tries to get him to crawl or move around (but he HATES being on his stomach), and he eats and sleeps a lot like usual.
I think it's harder on me than him. I miss him during the day but I'm getting used to it. I'm so excited to leave work and pick him up. And although he barely notices when I arrive, he is happy to come home.

Yummy fingers

Evan loves chewing on his fingers now. He's also starting to grab and hold things. Sometimes when I put toys in front of him and turn away, I turn back a few seconds later and he is holding something! He likes to grab things when I'm not looking. I guess I better get used to that.
He is still on medication but fewer doses, and we still are slowly tapering off. He does spit up more, and has slight reflux, but it's much better than it used to be.
I'm taking Evan to work with me, working almost full-time (32 hrs a week). I will takes photos of my office/nursery.

Happy Halloween, mon petit poulet!
Back to work
Tomorrow I go back to work. It's only part-time and I'm going to try bringing Evan to work with me. I'm nervous about that--I hope I won't be too distracted. And I hope Evan will be distracted enough to entertain himself. If not, I'll have to put him in daycare sooner than planned.
I feel like I've been gone from work forever. I'm sure a lot has changed and I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do. I can't imagine what it's like for those moms who take off a year or two or ten, then go back to work. That must be so hard!
So my "vacation" is over. This is a huge change for Evan, me, and even JR. I won't be bored anymore.... And I may miss it sometimes. Yet another adventure, I hope it goes well!

Weighing in at....
Today Evan had a doctor appointment (the specialist). It's been a month since his last appointment--finally they are not as frequent! His weight is 12 lbs, 12 oz and his height is almost 24 inches. He is now in the 10th percentile for both his weight and his height--and this is for his actual age of 4 months (not the adjusted age).

(And what do you say to Mommy?)
Hahaha, je rigole...

Trip to Napa
This was our first trip with Evan, and was a good experiment trip since it was only a couple days. And it went great! Evan slept a lot (especially in the car which I guess has a sedating effect for most babies) and we learned a lot. The biggest lesson for me was: yes, I CAN travel with baby Evan and no, it is NOT that difficult, so I don't need to stress out. So I definitely gained confidence in that arena. Maybe it was beginner's luck, but hopefully things will go well for the next couple trips. I read online that for babies 4-6 months old is the "golden age" for travel.
On the way up to Napa, we stopped at the Golden Gate for the breathtaking view (I've seen it so many times and it never gets old). Evan could not enjoy the view because he was sound asleep but we showed it to him anyway...
Then we went to our hotel and since our room wasn't ready, I fed Evan by the pool. After that we went to Sonoma, did some wine tasting in a winery, walked around downtown. Then, back to the hotel to settle in and unload our car full of stuff (you'd think we were leaving for a month, but with all of Evan's gear we were packed. Finally I understand why families have SUVs and minivans...)
"Ah, the Marriott isn't so bad..."
We ate dinner in a nice restaurant (late, because we went after Evan ate) and Evan slept the whole time in his carseat. Then he slept great in his portable crib, not waking up at all during the night. (By the way, Evan just started sleeping through the night now--it's been 4 nights in a row!) JR fed him in the morning while I slept in a little more, then the 4 of us went to the restaurant for brunch (I fed Evan while we ordered and waited for our food--then he sat happily in his carseat while we ate).
Off for the second day of sightseeing--we visited a couple wineries and drove up to Calistoga, enjoying the scenery along the way. One winery had a museum section with a private collection of modern art. Evan stared at it all as we rolled him in his stroller (I think he already has a great appreciation of art). At the second winery we did some wine tasting and a few people stared at me as Evan cried, his wail echoing in the cave-like tasting area. Oh well. Alain let Evan smell the wine and he stopped crying (I think he already has a great appreciation of wine).
We got to Old Faithful Geyser in Calistoga just in time to see the last eruption of the day.
A true candid shot--JR smiling for the camera then sees the beginning of the eruption behind me...

Unfortunately the photos are a bit dark, but you can see the geyser erupting and the rainbow in the water vapor...
Then we visited downtown Calistoga for a little water tasting. Actually, the water isn't really from Calistoga, which I was disappointed to learn. But it's a charming little town and we bought Calistoga water anyway.
We finally headed home and ate at BJ's grill (again, Evan ate while we ordered and waited for the food) and we got home around 10:30pm.
Next trips, building in distance and length: Colorado for Thanksgiving, France for Christmas.

All spirit, no TV
JR was looking forward to the game last weekend all week, I was looking forward to dressing up Evan in his Broncos gear all day... Then the time arrived, we happily took photos (well, Evan was not so happy because he just wanted to eat), and JR sat down with Evan in front of the massive HD TV. And 5 minutes before the start of the game, the TV died!!! JR desperately tried everything he could, but to no avail... The brand new TV was playing an evil trick on him and would not turn on. As for Evan, I soon changed him into his pyjamas (with no trace of navy blue or orange) so as not to remind JR of what he was missing.
